Spanish Rice

This is a great Spanish rice side dish recipe that is better than packaged rice.


  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 cup brown rice (uncooked)
  • 1/2 cup onion (chopped)
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper (chopped)
  • 1 can tomato sauce (ounces)


1. Heat oil in a 10-inch skillet over medium heat. Cook rice and onion in oil about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until rice is golden brown and onion is tender.
2. Stir in remaining ingredients. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer 45-50 minutes, stirring occasionally, until rice is tender and all of the liquid is absorbed.
