Old Fashioned Buttermilk Cake is very moist and is topped with a simple frosting that is poured over the warm cake. This recipe is so easy!

Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup melted butter 2 sticks
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla

For the frosting:

  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup melted butter 1 stick
  • 6 tbsp milk or enough to make it a pourable consistency
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400° and spray an 11” X 17” jelly roll pan with nonstick spray.

  • Whisk the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Add the water and butter and whisk until combined. Add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla whisking until combined. Pour into prepared pan.

  • Bake until golden and the edges start to pull away from the pan, 16-18 minutes.
  • Cool on a wire rack and make frosting immediately by combining the powdered sugar, melted butter, milk and vanilla in a large bowl. Pour over warm cake.
    4 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 cup melted butter, 6 tbsp milk, 1 tsp vanilla
  • Cool completely before cutting and serving.

Notes

The frosting  should be a pourable consistency, if it is too thick add more milk, if it is too thin add more powdered sugar.
