Easy Air Fryer Seasoned Potatoes and Onions recipe is the perfect easy side dish. You’d think I would tire of potatoes but I never do! They are one of my favorite foods and I have dedicated a whole section on this blog to them.

While potatoes are a complex carb, if prepared right they can be part of a healthy meal. Also it isn’t the potato itself that is so bad for us, sometimes it is what we choose to put on them that makes them high in calories, fat and sodium. There is a great article over at Potato Goodness that gives the run down on the nutritional value of potatoes. A whole website dedicated to potatoes, can you believe it?!

See recipe card for exact amounts.

    Ingredient Notes

Just a handful of ingredients are all you need to make these air fryer potatoes.

Potatoes – our go-to is the Russet potato, we always have them on hand.

Olive Oil – we mostly use classic olive oil but you can use any type you have.

Onion – we use yellow onions or white onions.

Spices – this is personal preference and we don’t use the same seasonings every time we make this dish.

How to Make Air-Fried Potatoes & Onions

    1. Mix olive oil and spices in a large mixing bowl; set aside.
    2. Cut potatoes and onions into bite size chunks, add potatoes into the bowl with the olive oil and spices; toss to coat.
    3. Spray air fryer basket with cooking spray.
    4. Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket and cook at 380° for 10 minutes. Shake and add the onions, cook again at 380° for another 10 minutes. If potatoes are golden brown and fork tender then they are done. If not then cook an additional 3-5 minutes.

Do I have to soak the potatoes in cold water to achieve crispy air fryer potatoes?

Nope, I do not. I work full time and just don’t have 30 minutes, or even 15 minutes extra time to soak my potatoes first. While it might draw some of the starch out and result in a crispier potato I am happy with the way my potatoes come out. They are golden brown, cooked perfectly and are a faster and healthier alternative to traditional fried potatoes. Good enough for me! Soak them if you want but no, you definitely don’t have to.

Do I have to put my diced potatoes the air fryer basket in a single layer?

Nuh-uh, I do not. I need to cook enough at one time for the whole family. Cooking them in batches is just not feasible for us. We just make sure we shake them up about half way through the cooking process.

    Tips & Tricks

    • Scrub potatoes clean and make sure they are dry before you cut them.
    • Toss the potato chunks in the olive oil mixture until they are as evenly coated as possible. Because we only use a little oil we to toss them around a bit to spread the oil onto all sides of the potatoes.
    • We cut our potatoes into 1″ – 1 ½″ chunks, smaller pieces of potatoes will take less time to cook so you can speed this recipe up a bit if you cut them smaller.
    • Not all air fryers cook the same so you may need to adjust the cooking time up or down a bit.
    • Potatoes are done when a fork goes into them easily and they are brown, you can make them as dark or light brown as you like.
    • As you can see in the pictures we like our potatoes to be lightly browned and the onions to be browned a little on the edges. For more caramelized onions add them in at the beginning instead of after the potatoes have cooked halfway.

What kind of oil can be used for these air fryer potatoes & onions?

Olive oil, avocado oil, canola oil, vegetable oil, safflower oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil and corn oil are all a good choice because they have a high smoke point. Serious Eats has a great article about oils.

What kind of spices to use in these air fryer onions and potatoes?

In this particular recipe we use garlic powder, paprika and a little salt. There are many herbs and spices you can use, below are a few suggestions.

    • Black Pepper
    • Italian Seasoning
    • Onion Powder
    • Ranch Dressing Mix
    • Lipton Onion Soup Mix
    • Cayenne Pepper
    • Parsley
    • Rosemary
    • Oregano
    • Basil
    • Thyme
    • Lemon Pepper Seasoning

What We Love About This Delicious Side Dish

Cooking potatoes in the air fryer is our new favorite thing because it takes less time than traditional frying.

It is healthier because we use less oil.

All we need are a few simple ingredients that we always have on-hand.

We like that we can tailor this tasty side dish to whatever we are having by changing up the herbs and spices.

We usually make this easy Air Fryer Seasoned Potatoes and Onions recipe to serve with a meaty main dish and another vegetable for a complete meal.

This recipe can easily be split in half, I don’t recommend cooking more than 2 pounds of potatoes at one time.
