Sliced Potatoes in the Air Fryer are so easy! It has been a while since I have shared a potato recipe and I am super excited to share this recipe for air fryer potato slices! This is my first air fryer recipe on the blog and I can’t wait to develop and share more!

A close up of the cooked potatoes on a white plate with the recipe title written at the top.

I love potatoes. In fact, they are tied with cake as my all time favorite food. Yep! Cake is my favorite sweet treat and potatoes are my favorite savory food. Now, I love many foods but if I had to pick, then these would be the top two. I think potatoes are the perfect side dish to compliment just about any meaty main dish. We serve pork chops, steak or chicken with some type of potato side dish and a fresh vegetable for an easy well-balanced meal.

So Lee’s sister makes fried potato rounds and he always thought I was doing them wrong if I made cubed potatoes instead of circles. Okay, so he never actually said that but I was picking up what he was putting down. You know what I mean, right? Plus the thicker slices took forever to cook and the thin slices broke apart as I was trying to turn them over. After making sliced potatoes a few times I gave up and just made diced potatoes.

Then came the invention of the air fryer, the absolute best way to make crispy potatoes that don’t take too much time and don’t stick together. I will be turning all of my favorite fried potato dishes into air fryer potato recipes. I mean, air frying is so much quicker than frying on the stove top.

    Ingredients

See recipe card for exact amounts.

The six ingredients needed to make the recipe measured out sitting on a table.

    Ingredient Notes

Potatoes – the best potatoes to use are Russet potatoes. I have not tried this recipe with Yukon gold or red potatoes.

Olive Oil – you still need a little oil to achieve the perfect crispy potato slices. Extra virgin, classic or light olive oil will work. You can also use vegetable, corn or canola oil.

Spices – in this particular recipe I use dried parsley, onion powder, garlic powder and a little salt. This is personal preference and I don’t make mine exactly the same every time. See below for some suggestions.

How to Make Sliced Potatoes in the Air Fryer

    1. Cut potatoes into 1/4″ thick slices.
    2. In the bottom of a large bowl mix the olive oil and spices together.
    3. Toss the potatoes in the spice mixture and evenly coat them. I use the best kitchen tools I have to do this; clean hands. You can use a spoon if you like.
    4. Place seasoned potato slices into the air fryer basket and make sure potatoes are not right on top of each other. See tips below.
    5. Air fry potato slices at 400° for 5 minutes, shake them, cook for 5 more minutes, shake them and cook for 3 minutes longer. This results in the perfect doneness for me because I like my food to be lightly browned. If you want your potatoes to be more brown then cook an additional 2-3 minutes.

How Long to Cook Potatoes in the Air Fryer

This depends on how thick your slices are and what temperature you set your air fryer on.

I cook 1/4 inch potato slices for 13 minutes at 400°. They come out lightly browned and perfectly soft in the middle.

Air fryers can cook differently so a good rule of thumb is to cook your potatoes in 5 minute increments and check for doneness along the way. When I check my potatoes after the second 5 minutes I know that they are close enough to done to only need 3 more minutes. Find the cooking time that makes the potatoes exactly how you like and then you can cook them that amount of time every time.

That is what I love about cooking the most; I know that by trial and error I can make a dish just the way I like it.

How to Cut Potatoes to Put in the Air Fryer

I use a mandolin like this one to get perfect even slices. Mandolins can be very dangerous and I am extremely cautious when I use mine. Lee is not allowed to use it because of a “prior incident” and my boss nearly cut the tip of his finger off using one. You can also use a sharp knife but I find it difficult to get the slices even. Some food processors have the ability to cut 1/4 inch slices.

Do I have to soak the potatoes in cold water to achieve crispy air fryer potatoes?

Nope, I do not. I work full time and just don’t have 30 minutes, or even 15 minutes extra time to soak my potatoes first. While it might draw some of the starch out and result in a crispier potato I am happy with the way my potatoes come out. They are golden brown, cooked perfectly and are a faster and healthier alternative to traditional fried potatoes. Good enough for me! Soak them if you want but no, you definitely don’t have to.

Do I have to put my sliced potatoes the air fryer basket in a single layer?

Nuh-uh, I usually have them two to three deep. I try to make sure they aren’t right on top of each other. So I put the first layer in and then put the next layer in where there is one top of two. Sort of like laying bricks. I feel like they will stick together if they are directly on top of each other. I don’t fuss over it too much when I shake the potatoes up every 5 minutes. I just shake them and put them right back in.

Tips For Making Air Fryer Sliced Potatoes

Select potatoes that are equal sizes. I use two medium potatoes. How big is a medium potato, you ask? The two I used this time were about 5 1/2″ X 2 1/2″ and weighed about 8 ounces each. A medium potato is about 5 – 10 ounces, anything over 10 ounces is considered to be a large potato. If you have a kitchen scale then you can measure 16 ounces of potatoes that are about the same size around. I know not everyone has a scale so I like to include the dimensions of the potatoes for those beginner cooks that don’t have a clue when I say medium potato.

Toss potato slices in the olive oil mixture until they are as evenly coated as possible. Because we only use a little olive oil you will need to toss them around a bit to spread the oil onto both sides of all of the potatoes.

If food tends to stick to your air fryer basket then go ahead and give it a little spray with nonstick cooking spray.

What Kind of Spices to Use on Air Fried Potato Coins

There really are no rules, so use your favorite spices. We make these differently, depending on what we are eating them with. I usually use one or two dried herbs with a combination of the other spices.

    The spices we use are:

    • Garlic Powder
    • Onion Powder
    • Salt
    • Black Pepper
    • Italian Seasoning
    • Paprika
    • Dried Parsley
    • Dried Rosemary
    • Dried Basil
    • Dried Thyme

If you want them to have a little kick then add some cayenne pepper.

    Conclusion

Sliced potatoes in the air fryer make a delicious side dish and we eat them with a fork.

Another great option for this recipe is to eat them as an appetizer or snack. You could dip them in sour cream, a spicy ketchup, plain ketchup, or your favorite dipping sauce.
