I’ve said it before—dessert is my weakness, and this one is no exception. Just picture it: a moist yellow cake soaked in gooey caramel, followed by a rich layer of chocolate pudding, a fluffy layer of whipped topping, and finished with crunchy Twix pieces.
Sounds irresistible, right?!
I love making poke cakes, and this might just be one of my all-time favorites. Twix is my favorite candy bar, so turning it into a cake was a no-brainer.
The yellow cake mimics the shortbread cookies, caramel sauce and chocolate pudding bring in those signature flavors, and while a Twix bar doesn’t have whipped topping, let’s be honest, Cool Whip makes everything better!

Ingredient Notes
- Cake Mix: Homemade cake is great but to keep this easy I always use a boxed cake mix.
- Caramel Topping: Store bought caramel sauce works perfectly for this to keep it easy. I do have a recipe for a 4-ingredient homemade caramel sauce that I make in the microwave that works too!
- Pudding: I use instant pudding because it sets up quickly. I haven’t made this cake with any other type (homemade or cook & serve).
- Whipped Topping: I always use store bought whipped topping. I haven’t made this using homemade whipped cream and not sure it would hold up as well.
- Eggs: I always use room temperature eggs when baking. Taste of Home has a great article about why you should, and how to quickly warm them up if you forget to take them out.
- Oil: I use canola or vegetable oil to make the cake. It can be swapped with melted butter or unsweetened applesauce.
- Milk: I use whole milk to make the pudding. You can use 2% or low-fat. I haven’t made this with dairy-free milk.
- Candy: Twix Bar, not required but highly recommended to be used as a garnish.
How to Make Twix Poke Cake Recipe
- Preheat the oven to 350° and spray 9″ X 13″ cake pan with cooking spray.
- In a large mixing bowl combine the cake mix, water, eggs, and oil.
- Pour cake batter into prepared pan and bake 34-38 minutes, or according to package directions.
- While cake is still hot poke holes in it using the handle of a wooden spoon.
- Pour caramel topping evenly over cake.
- Mix pudding and 2 cups milk, let sit for a minute and then pour evenly over the caramel.
- Carefully cover the pudding layer evenly with whipped topping. See tip below.
- Top with chopped Twix bars.
Tips
- Spread the whipped topping using a single, smooth motion with the spatula. Avoid going back and forth or the pudding will get mixed into the whipped topping. It’ll still taste great but won’t look as good.
- Save a little money and buy store brand ingredients, or use your favorite brands. This cake is amazing no matter what kind of cake mix, pudding, caramel topping, and whipped topping you use. When all those delicious layers come together, you get one seriously delicious dessert!
Variations
- Swap the yellow cake for chocolate cake.
- The cake can be topped with additional caramel sauce and chocolate chips and/or chocolate sauce if you don’t have (or in addition to) Twix.
Storage
Store covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, the pudding and whipped topping require refrigeration.
Absolutely! To freeze individual servings, flash freeze them first by placing the pieces on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freezing until solid. While some suggest only flash freezing for about an hour, I let mine freeze for at least 3-4 hours to ensure they’re completely firm. Once frozen, wrap each piece in plastic wrap and store them in an airtight container. Just keep in mind that the Twix on top will soften. To thaw, unwrap the cake while it’s still frozen (so the plastic wrap doesn’t stick to the topping) and thaw in the refrigerator.
