Can you toast bread in an air fryer?

Absolutely! The air fryer is a great appliance to make plain toast. The blowing hot air moves the bread slices around so we make our toast without anything on it. Then we top it with our favorite toppings after it comes out of the air fryer. While air frying doesn’t toast bread as evenly as using a regular toaster it can be a good option.

We tried to make cheese toast and it blew over and made a bit of a mess. Luckily, it was easy to clean up.

How to toast bread in the air fryer

    1. Place slices of bread in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
    2. Air fry at 400° for 2 minutes, flip it over and cook if for 1-2 minutes longer.

Notes – I have a basket style air fryer and this time results in golden toast. For lighter or darker toast adjust the time accordingly.

A quick internet search shows that toast will take about 2-3 minutes longer in a toaster oven style air fryer.

Subsequent batches will cook a little faster because the air fryer is already hot.

    Can I use different breads?

Make this toast using any type of bread you like. White bread, whole wheat bread, sourdough bread, and gluten-free bread all work in the air fryer. Cooking time may need to be adjusted depending on the thickness of your bread.

You can even toast bagels or English muffins. Because bagels come in thick slices they should be toasted at a lower temperature of 350° for 3-4 minutes. The muffin will take about about 2-3 minutes for lightly toasted and 4-5 minutes for darker toasted.

    Topping ideas for delicious toast

avocado – we eat avocado toast twice a week. To make it mash 1/4th of an avocado on each piece of toast.

nut butter – peanut butter, almond butter, or cashew butter are all great toppings for toast. Drizzle with honey for an extra tasty treat.

jelly or jam – we love strawberry preserves and always have it on hand.

marmalade – Lee’s favorite on toast is orange marmalade.

egg – top buttered toast with an egg for extra protein.

cream cheese – plain regular fat or low-fat, sweet or savory.

How to make air fryer cinnamon toast

Mix 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon with 2 teaspoons of sugar. When the toast is done spread a little butter on it and sprinkle with the desired amount of cinnamon sugar.

How to make air fryer garlic toast

Mix 2 tablespoons of softened butter with 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder. Spread onto toasted bread after it comes out of the air fryer.
