Ingredient Notes
- Instant Coffee: Regular instant coffee or instant espresso powder both work.
- Milk: Any milk works including whole, 2%, skim, almond, oat, soy, or coconut milk.
- Chocolate Syrup: Hershey’s, Torani, or store-brand chocolate syrup all work well.
- Whipped Cream: Canned or a dollop of whipped topping.
- Chocolate Shavings: Grated chocolate bar or mini chips work best.
How to Make a Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino
- Put some whipped cream in the bottom of a tall glass, then add a drizzle of chocolate syrup or chocolate sauce. About ¼ cup whipped cream and a tablespoon of chocolate sauce.
- Place the instant coffee, milk, chocolate sauce and ice in the pitcher of a blender. Blend on medium speed until you no longer hear chunks of ice hitting the sides of the blender, then blend on high for 20 seconds or so, then back to medium for about 10 seconds, then low for another 10 seconds or so.
- Pour the mixture into the glass on top of the whipped cream and top with more whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Tips
- Once you learn the method that works in your specific blender you will be able to do it this way every time.
- You can adjust the amount of instant coffee and chocolate sauce to suit the amount of chocolate flavor and strength of coffee flavor you like best. I don’t recommend re-blending the drink so you would need to adjust these amounts the next time you make it.
- Drizzle additional chocolate syrup or chocolate sauce on top of the whipped cream or put some cocoa powder in a mesh strainer and sprinkle it on top of the whipped cream.
Does a Frappuccino have coffee?
Yes. Starbucks Mocha Frappuccinos contain coffee. Starbucks uses a proprietary Frappuccino Roast, which is made specifically for blended drinks. This homemade version uses instant coffee as a convenient substitute.
Can I Use Instant Coffee Instead of Espresso?
Yes. Instant coffee is an easy substitute for espresso in homemade frappuccinos. It provides coffee flavor without brewing coffee first, making this recipe quick and convenient.
