Unlike chocolate sauce or hot fudge, this homemade chocolate syrup is thin enough to stir easily into hot or iced coffee while still adding rich chocolate flavor.

It has a smooth, pourable consistency that’s lighter than hot fudge, making it perfect for coffee drinks, chocolate milk, or drizzling over ice cream, yogurt, pancakes, and other treats.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • Easy recipe: No complicated steps here—just add everything to a saucepan, whisk well, and heat until it becomes a smooth, chocolatey syrup.
    • Simple ingredients: You don’t need anything fancy to make this. Chances are you already have sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt in your pantry, so you can whip this up anytime the craving strikes.
    • Better than store-bought: No preservatives or high fructose corn syrup—just simple ingredients and rich chocolate flavor.

    Ingredients

All of the ingredients needed to make the Chocolate Coffee Syrup Recipe.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Cocoa powder: Unsweetened cocoa powder works best. Store-brand or name-brand both work well, so use whatever you have on hand.
    • Sugar: Regular granulated sugar gives the best texture. Brown sugar can be used, but it will add a slight molasses flavor.
    • Water: Tap water works perfectly fine, though filtered or bottled water can also be used.
    • Vanilla: Vanilla extract adds warmth and rounds out the chocolate flavor. Vanilla flavoring works in a pinch.
    • Salt: Just a pinch enhances the chocolate flavor and balances the sweetness. Table salt, kosher salt, or sea salt all work.

Take off the heat and whisk in the vanilla and salt. Store in an airtight container like a mason jar.

    How to Use Chocolate Syrup

From breakfast to dessert, the possibilities are endless. Once you make it, you’ll be finding new excuses to drizzle it on everything!

    • Stir into hot or iced coffee, or use it to make coffee shop favorites like my Tuxedo Mocha or Mocha Frappuccino.
    • Mix into cold milk for homemade chocolate milk or warm milk for an easy hot chocolate.
    • Drizzle over ice cream, brownies, cake, or cheesecake.
    • Swirl into yogurt or oatmeal, or drizzle over pancakes, waffles, or French toast.
    • Blend into milkshakes, smoothies, or protein shakes.
    • Serve as a dip for strawberries, bananas, apple slices, or other fresh fruit.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can this be made low-sugar or sugar-free?

Yes! You can swap the sugar for your favorite low-sugar or sugar-free sweetener. Keep in mind that different sweeteners may change the flavor slightly, but it will still make a delicious syrup for coffee drinks or chocolate milk.

How long does this stay good in the refrigerator?

If stored in an airtight container in the fridge, this syrup will stay fresh for at least a month—sometimes even longer. Just give it a good stir or shake before using, as it may settle a bit over time.

Can you put chocolate syrup in coffee?

Yes! This homemade chocolate syrup for coffee is thinner than hot fudge, making it perfect for stirring into hot or iced coffee.
