Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods (easy microwave recipe) is so easy and fun to make! These are a festive treat perfect for the holiday season. They are sure to be a crowd favorite at work or school parties and they also make a great Christmas gift. We love it when we get edible gifts for Christmas! I also love to give food as gifts. People are usually impressed that someone took the time to make delicious homemade gifts for them.

Many pretzel rods that have been dipped in chocolate and have sprinkles on them, the sprinkles are red and green for Christmas.

For Christmas this past year I made treat bags for my coworkers and a neighbor that had Cake Mix Cookies, Toffee Snickerdoodles, White Chocolate Chip Cranberry Oatmeal Cookies, Rolo Pretzel Turtles and these Christmas Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods. They were a huge hit and one of my coworkers told me that chocolate-covered pretzels were her all-time favorite Christmas treats. How cool is that?!

Three pretzel rods that have been dipped in white chocolate and have milk chocolate drizzled over them.

These are so much fun to make and a great activity for the whole family to get involved in. Little kids love to help make them and teenagers can make them by themselves. Making these could become a family tradition that can be passed down for generations to come.

    Ingredients

See recipe card for exact amounts.

    Ingredient Notes

Just a few simple ingredients are all you need!

Pretzel Rods – any brand will work, we often use the grocery store brand. Walmart, Kroger and Aldi have great store brand options.

Milk Chocolate Chips & White Chocolate Chips – we like using a good brand of chocolate but there are many options, see notes below for some suggestions.

How to Make Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper.

In a microwave-safe bowl or tall glass melt chocolate in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring each time, until chocolate is melted and smooth.

Dip pretzel rod into melted chocolate, moving it around to get a good even coat onto it. Twist and turn the pretzel rod so that the excess chocolate fall off. Place pretzel rod onto parchment or wax paper, add toppings and or sprinkles, then allow to cool.

How to Make the Fancy Drizzle

Put some white chocolate and dark chocolate into a piping bag or plastic bag with the tip cut off. One for each type of chocolate or color candy melt, of course. After the first color has set up then drizzle with the opposite color chocolate. I put them in a row and then drizzle over them. Sometimes I just do one at a time and sometimes I do them in a row. Let them set up and then you have cool looking pretzels with both color chocolates on them. You can do this with colored candy melts for just about any holiday, party, or gathering.

What Kind of Chocolate Should be Used to Make Holiday Pretzel Rods?

This is personal preference, use your favorite type of chocolate. We like the savory sweet combo of just about any chocolate or candy melt with the salty pretzel rods.

Chocolate chips, chocolate melts and almond bark are all good options to make chocolate-covered pretzel rods. You can use milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate chips, dark chocolate, white chocolate or colored candy melts. Both vanilla and chocolate almond bark are great options that won’t break the bank if you need to make a ton of these babies. There is a great article over at Microwave Geek explaining how to melt almond bark in the microwave.

You can use chocolate bars but they have a lot of sugar so they will melt faster. Chop it into equal-sized small pieces and melt it in 15 second intervals taking care not to leave it in too long.

Decoration & Topping Ideas for Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

Many of mine, as you can see in the photos, have Christmas sprinkles. Use your choice of sprinkles, but here are some ideas.

Festive Sprinkles, Jimmies, or colored sanding sugar for just about any holiday or event.

    • Green for St. Patrick’s Day
    • Red for Valentine’s Day
    • Pastel colors for Easter
    • Red, white and blue for July 4th
    • Orange, black, purple and green for Halloween
    • Colors that go with the theme of your particular party
    • The colors of your favorite sports team for tailgating or home watch parties

Use your favorite toppings but here are a few ideas.

    • Chopped nuts
    • Shredded coconut
    • Toffee bits
    • Mini m&ms
    • Cinnamon candy
    • Mini chocolate chips
    • Crushed candy canes
    • Crushed hard candy
    • Chopped mini peanut butter cups

    Recipe Tips

You can let your chocolate pretzel rods set up at room temperature but I am an impatient person so I put them into the refrigerator to set up faster. This is why I put them on a rimmed baking sheet.

Use a spoon to help get the chocolate onto the pretzels.

Put sprinkles and toppings onto wet chocolate so they stick well.

    Storage

Store in an airtight container for 2-3 weeks. Although I can’t imagine them lasting that long.
