These Duncan Hines cake mix cookies are one of the easiest desserts you can make. With just 3 ingredients plus mix-ins, you’ll have soft, fluffy cookies in about 20 minutes.

You can use any flavor of cake mix and customize them with chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, or whatever you have on hand.

You can make soft cake mix cookies with just 3 ingredients: a box of Duncan Hines cake mix, eggs, and oil. Bake at 350°F for 10–12 minutes. A standard batch makes about 24–36 cookies, depending on how large you scoop the dough.

How Many Cookies Does a Box of Duncan Hines Cake Mix Make?

A standard box makes about 24–36 cookies, depending on how large you scoop the dough.
Using a 1-tablespoon scoop, you’ll get right around 3 dozen cookies, for consistent cookie size.

Can You Turn Boxed Cake Mix into Cookies?

Yes, you can turn boxed cake mix into cookies by adding eggs and oil to the dry mix. This creates a thicker dough that bakes into soft, cake-like cookies in about 10–12 minutes at 350°F.

Is It Better to Make Cake Mix Cookies with Butter or Oil?

Oil is typically used for cake mix cookies because it keeps them soft and moist. Butter can be used for a richer flavor, but it may make the cookies slightly firmer.

I’ve used these cookies in treat bags and they’re always a hit. They’re perfect with other easy desserts for parties or sharing. Try them with Toffee Snickerdoodle Cookies, Soft Oatmeal White Chocolate Chip Cranberry Cookies, Rolo Pretzel Turtle Bites and Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods and they’re always a hit.

    Ingredients

Just three ingredients plus mix-ins are all you need for this cake mix cookies recipe!

See recipe card below for exact measurements.

A boxed cake mix, 2 eggs, small bowl of oil and bag of butterscotch chips on the table.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Box of Cake Mix: We use one box of Duncan Hines cake mix for this particular recipe but you can use Betty Crocker, store brand or gluten free cake mix.
    • Eggs: We use large eggs.
    • Oil: I use canola oil but you can use vegetable oil or corn oil if that is what you have.
    • Butterscotch Chips: I wanted something that goes well with chocolate.

How to Make Cookies from Cake Mix

Making cookies from cake mix is simple—just combine the mix with eggs and oil, then bake like regular cookies. This method works with almost any boxed cake mix flavor.

    1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or spray with cooking spray.
    2. In a large bowl combine the cake mix with eggs and oil, fold in butterscotch chips.
    3. Drop cookie dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake 10 – 12 minutes or until cookies are set. Cookies will look moist. Cool 2 minutes on cookie sheets and then move to a wire cooling rack.

Cake Mix Cookies Tips for Soft, Fluffy Results

    • Use a 1-tablespoon cookie scoop to quickly portion the dough evenly. This recipe makes about 3 dozen cookies.
    • Let eggs come to room temperature before baking for better rise and texture.
    • Mix the dough by hand—no electric mixer needed.

    Flavor Suggestions

Once you learn the base recipe, you can mix and match flavors and add-ins to create all kinds of cookies.

    • Carrot Cake: Add shredded carrots and chopped walnuts, then top with cream cheese frosting.
    • Strawberry: Use strawberry cake mix with white or milk chocolate chips.
    • Yellow Cake: Try chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, M&Ms, sprinkles, or toffee bits.
    • Chocolate: Add butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips, or caramel bits.
    • Red Velvet or Chocolate Crinkle: Roll dough in powdered sugar before baking.
    • Citrus (Lemon or Orange): Add white chocolate chips for a sweeter balance.

    Storage

Store in an airtight container or zip-top bag to maintain freshness. These are best within the first couple of days and may start to dry out after day 3.

You can freeze these cookies, but they may become slightly sticky as they thaw.

Ooo that sounds so good! I haven’t tested cinnamon chip cookies with a spice cake mix yet, but you can definitely use this recipe as a base—just swap in a spice cake mix and add cinnamon chips. That should get you really close!
