Our Easy Homemade Caramel Coffee recipe allows you to have a flavorful and delicious cup of coffee and you don’t even have to go to the coffee shop to get it. We are huge coffee drinkers and are always looking for ways to spruce up our morning cup of joe. I love caramel flavor and one of my favorite ways to have it is in a cup of strong coffee.

One 16 ounce clear glass cup of caramel coffee with the title above it.

We chose to use Cool Whip to top our caramel coffee. I wanted to have a sweet treat on the top and Reddi Wip would have melted into the coffee faster. I also wanted to keep it easy as possible. You can use homemade whipped cream if you like.

    Ingredients

Just a few basic ingredients are all you need to make this easy recipe.

See recipe card below for exact amounts.

A pot of black coffee, a bottle of milk, a bowl of whipped cream and a jar of caramel sauce.

    Ingredient Notes

Brewed Coffee – we use our drip coffee maker.

Milk – we use whole milk.

Caramel Sauce – I make a homemade caramel sauce that is so quick and easy you won’t even believe it!

Whipped Cream – this is optional but it goes perfectly on hot coffee. We use Cool Whip because it gets melty and delicious without totally melting into the coffee.

How to Make Homemade Caramel Coffee

You will need one and one-half cups of brewed strong coffee divided between two sixteen ounce cups.

    1. In a microwave safe bowl or measuring cup combine milk and caramel sauce, microwave for 1 minute or until hot, stir and divide between cups of coffee.
    2. Top with whipped cream and drizzle with extra caramel sauce, if desired.

Please note – we have not made caramel iced coffee using this recipe. You could try it. My guess is that you would need to combine everything and let it get cold in the fridge, or let it come to room temperature, and then add ice cubes when it has cooled down enough to not melt them right away.

    Alternate Methods

Warm the milk and caramel mixture on the stove in a small sauce pan over medium heat. Watch it closely because milk tends to boil over quickly once it gets to that point.

The amount of caramel sauce we use is just a guideline, add more or less depending on how sweet you like it.

    How to Make Caramel Sauce

All you need is heavy cream, unsalted butter, brown sugar and kosher salt to make this easy microwave caramel sauce. Homemade is so easy and it taste better than store bought. It is also a fraction of the price. You will have leftover caramel sauce to use on ice cream or other desserts too! Find the recipe here.

What is the difference between a caramel latte, caramel macchiato and a caramel cappucino?

Latte – latte is caffe latte in Italian, just latte in English and is a shot of espresso mixed with steamed milk.

Macchiato – is a stronger coffee with just a splash of milk so it has a rich flavor.

Cappucino – is a layered coffee drink with distinct layers of equal parts espresso, milk and foamed milk.

Our easy homemade caramel coffee recipe is not really any of these as it is a flavored coffee.

What Type of Coffee Should You Use?

There are four different coffee roasts; light roast, medium roast, medium-dark roast and dark roast. We usually use a medium roast because that is what we always have. Occasionally we buy dark roast and gourmet coffee for a treat. We are sort of coffee snobs so we never by light roast, and we just never buy instant coffee. If you like it because it is convenient, by all means, you do you.

We only put milk in our normal everyday coffee so when we make flavored coffee drinks we make our regular coffee much stronger than usual. Twice as strong because we want rich coffee flavor as a base before we add other flavors.

What is the Best Milk to Use?

This is personal preference. We usually use whole cow’s milk because that is what we always have. You can use almond milk, oat milk, or your favorite type.
