I’m a beet lover—I enjoy them in salads and even fried up as a side dish, but they’re also the perfect way to add earthy flavor and nutritional value to our morning smoothie. Beets are packed with immune-boosting vitamin C, and they may help lower blood pressure and support better heart health. We eat them every chance we get!

All of the ingredients measured out to make the Blueberry Beet Smoothie recipe.

    Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

    • Blueberries: I use frozen blueberries because I always have them on hand, but fresh blueberries are also a good choice—especially when they’re in season.
    • Beets: Canned red beets are perfect for this smoothie since they’re already cooked and ready to use. If you’re using raw beets, you’ll need to cook them first to soften the texture and mellow the flavor.
    • Yogurt: I go with Greek yogurt that’s low in sugar to keep things healthy. If you’re dairy-free, there are plenty of alternatives that work just as well.
    • Honey: This adds natural sweetness to the smoothie, but maple syrup is a great natural alternative if you prefer a plant-based option or simply love that flavor.
    • Milk: I use whole milk, but you can easily swap in a non-dairy alternative— cashew, soy, oat, or almond milk are all great options depending on your taste or dietary needs.
    • Ice: We like our smoothies cold with a creamy texture, so I add ice to get it just right. Feel free to adjust the amount based on how thick or frosty you like it.

    Step-By-Step Instructions (with photos)

See recipe card below for complete directions with amounts.

All of the ingredients except the ice blended together in a pitcher.

Step 1: Put the blueberries, beets, yogurt, honey and milk into a blender and blend on high until smooth.

The ice added to the pitcher with the other ingredients before it is blended the final time.

Step 2: Add the ice and blend on high until you no longer hear large chunks of ice hitting the sides of the pitcher.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a high-speed blender to make this beet smoothie recipe?

A high-speed blender definitely makes things quicker and easier, but it’s not a must! You can use any standard blender. If you don’t have one, you can crush the ice in a plastic bag using a rolling pin or meat mallet before mixing the ingredients.

Can this be made ahead of time?

Yes! You can prep everything except the ice ahead of time. Just store the ingredients in an airtight container in the fridge, then blend and add the ice when you’re ready to enjoy it.
