Sliced Potatoes in the Air Fryer are the ultimate side dish! They are crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and ready in a fraction of the time it takes to fry them on the stove. I love potatoes as much as I love cake, and this no-soak method is my absolute favorite way to get them on the table fast.
Mindy’s Quick Success Tips:
- The “Brick” Layering: You don’t need a single layer. Stagger them like bricks in the basket to ensure the air can still circulate.
- Uniform Slices: Use a mandolin for ¼″ slices so they all cook at the same rate.
- The No-Soak Secret: You don’t need to soak these! Just toss them in the oil/spice mixture and go. They come out perfectly golden every time.

From Vicki: The Air Fried Potatoes are wonderful! Thank you!”
I love potatoes. In fact, they are tied with cake as my all time favorite food. Yep! Cake is my favorite sweet treat and potatoes are my favorite savory food.
Now, I love many foods but if I had to pick, then these would be the top two. I think potatoes are the perfect side dish to compliment just about any meaty main dish.
We serve pork chops, steak or chicken with some type of potato side dish and a fresh vegetable for an easy well-balanced meal.
So Lee’s sister makes fried potato rounds. He always thought I was doing them wrong if I made cubed potatoes instead of circles. Okay, so he never actually said that but I was picking up what he was putting down. You know what I mean, right?
The thicker slices took forever to cook. The thin slices broke apart when I tried to turn them over. After making sliced potatoes a few times I gave up and just made diced potatoes.
The air fryer was invented. It is absolutely the best way to make crispy potatoes. They don’t take too much time and don’t stick together. I will be turning all of my favorite fried potato dishes into air fryer potato recipes.
I mean, air frying is so much quicker than frying on the stove top.

Ingredient Notes
Potatoes: The best potatoes to use are Russet potatoes. I have not tried this recipe with Yukon gold or red potatoes.
Olive Oil: You still need a little oil to achieve the perfect crispy potato slices. Extra virgin, classic or light olive oil will work. You can also use vegetable, corn or canola oil.
Spices: In this particular recipe I use dried parsley, onion powder, garlic powder and a little salt. This is personal preference and I don’t make mine exactly the same every time. See below for some suggestions.
How to Make Sliced Potatoes in the Air Fryer
- Cut potatoes into ¼″ thick slices.
- In the bottom of a large bowl mix the olive oil and spices together.
- Toss the potatoes in the spice mixture and evenly coat them. I use the best kitchen tools I have to do this; clean hands. You can use a spoon if you like.
- Place seasoned potato slices into the air fryer basket and make sure potatoes are not right on top of each other. See tips below.
- Air fry potato slices at 400° for 5 minutes, shake them, cook for 5 more minutes, shake them and cook for 3 minutes longer. This results in the perfect doneness for me because I like my food to be lightly browned. If you want your potatoes to be more brown then cook an additional 2-3 minutes.

How Long to Cook Potatoes in the Air Fryer
This depends on how thick your slices are and what temperature you set your air fryer on.
I cook ¼ inch potato slices for 13 minutes at 400°. They come out lightly browned and perfectly soft in the middle.
Air fryers can cook differently. A good rule of thumb is to cook your potatoes in 5 minute increments. Check for doneness along the way. When I check my potatoes after the second 5 minutes I know that they are close enough to done to only need 3 more minutes. Find the cooking time that makes the potatoes exactly how you like and then you can cook them that amount of time every time.
That is what I love about cooking the most; I know that by trial and error I can make a dish just the way I like it.

Tips For Making Air Fryer Sliced Potatoes
- Select potatoes that are equal sizes. I use two medium potatoes. How big is a medium potato, you ask? The two I used this time were about 5 ½″ X 2 ½″ and weighed about 8 ounces each. A medium potato is about 5 – 10 ounces, anything over 10 ounces is considered to be a large potato. If you have a kitchen scale then you can measure 16 ounces of potatoes that are about the same size around. I know not everyone has a scale so I like to include the dimensions of the potatoes for those beginner cooks that don’t have a clue when I say medium potato.
- Toss potato slices in the olive oil mixture until they are as evenly coated as possible. Because we only use a little olive oil you will need to toss them around a bit to spread the oil onto both sides of all of the potatoes.
- If food tends to stick to your air fryer basket then go ahead and give it a little spray with nonstick cooking spray.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Soaking can help remove starch for slightly crispier potatoes, but it is not required. These air fryer potato coins still turn out golden brown and crispy without soaking.
No. I usually cook them 2–3 layers deep, making sure they are not stacked directly on top of each other. Shake the basket every 5 minutes so they cook evenly.
Use your favorite seasonings. Garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, seasoned salt, and dried herbs all work well on air fryer potato coins.

Perfect! I did rinse and dry the sliced potatoes in cold water first. I have tried every recipe imaginable, from parboiling to slicing them with a fry cutter and your receipe is fast and makes perfect potatoes! Thank you!
I am so glad you like them, we just had them last night. Thanks for commenting!
I tried them tonight as a side with salmon, they were perfect. Don’t chamge a thing.!!!
Awesome, we are so glad you like them!
Hi – finding your recipe makes me want to purchase an air fryer so I can make crispy sliced potatoes for appetizers. I’m looking for a neutral alternative to bread and crackers. I know potatoes are high starch, and you mentioned we could soak the slices in cold water first to reduce starch, and I would do that, too. Also a 1/4 thick sounds perfect for a special caviar and sour cream Christmas appetizer, and thinner ones would be great for dips. I’m so tired of bread and crackers- I’m wondering what else I can use?
Very glad I came across your blog.
Depending on what you are making cucumber slices can be used.
Hello Mindy, do you leave the skin on the potatoes? I figure you do but I just want to make sure.
Yes, we love them with the skin on. You can peel them iF you want to.

You are welcome, I am so glad you liked them!
