Craving juicy burgers but don’t want to fire up the outdoor grill? A George Foreman grill cooks hamburgers quickly indoors, and my half-pound patties are usually done in about 5–6 minutes after preheating. I’ll show you the cook time, temperature, preheat tips, and how I make easy burgers right in the kitchen.

How Long to Cook Burgers on a George Foreman Grill

Cook fresh half-pound hamburger patties on a preheated George Foreman grill for 5–6 minutes total, flipping halfway through for more even browning. Burgers are done when they reach 160°F in the center.

For my George Foreman Contact Smokeless grill, I preheat to 425°F with the lid closed, which takes about 5 minutes.

A grilled hamburger patty on a brioche bun, there are toppings on the burger.

Why I Like Cooking Hamburgers on a George Foreman Grill

    • Quick cook time – large half pound burgers are done in about 6 minutes.
    • Weather isn’t a factor – here in Kansas we have some windy days and cooking outdoors on the charcoal grill isn’t an option.
    • Toasted buns too – we toast our buns right on the grill before we cook the burgers.

How to Cook Burgers on a George Foreman Grill

    1. Preheat the grill to 425° with the lid closed, this takes about 5 minutes.
    2. Butter the buns and place on the grill for 2-3 minutes. Leave the lid open for this so you don’t smash the buns.
    3. Place burger patties on the lower grill plate, close the lid and cook for 3 minutes.
    4. Flip burgers over and cook an additional 2-3 minutes, or until it reaches the desired level of doneness.
    5. Serve with your favorite condiments and toppings.

George Foreman Grill Burger Cook Time

For fresh half-pound burger patties, cook for about 5–6 minutes total on a preheated George Foreman grill.

    A good timing guide is:

    • 4–5 minutes for smaller or thinner patties
    • 5–6 minutes for half-pound patties
    • 6–7 minutes for thicker patties or well-done burgers

Always check with a meat thermometer. Ground beef should reach 160°F.

What temperature do you cook burgers on a George Foreman grill?

I cook burgers at 425°F on my George Foreman Contact Smokeless grill. Preheat the grill with the lid closed until it signals that it is ready. If your model does not have a temperature setting, preheat it fully before adding the patties.

Do you have to flip burgers on George Foreman Grill?

Technically you don’t need to turn food over when grilling since there is a heating element on the top and bottom. However, I turn meat over about halfway through so it browns as evenly as possible.

Can you cook frozen burgers on a George Foreman grill?

Yes, you can cook frozen burger patties on a George Foreman grill, but I usually cook fresh patties. Frozen patties will take longer and may release more liquid as they cook.

Start checking frozen patties around 7–8 minutes, and continue cooking until the center reaches 160°F. Cook time will depend on the thickness of the patty and your grill model.

Four half pound burger on a plate, a plate with 2 hamburger buns, a plate with lettuce, tomatoes and red onion, and a George Foreman indoor grill sitting on the counter.

    Here’s What You’ll Need

    • Hamburger Patties: I usually buy mine already portioned and ready to cook. I season them simply with salt and black pepper. Use your favorite seasonings; garlic powder, onion powder, or seasoning salt would all be great.
    • Buns: We love brioche buns, but any bun will work perfectly. Make sure you toast them first to make them extra soft.
    • Toppings: We love red onion, lettuce, tomato, ketchup and mustard, use your favorite toppings.
Two brioche bun tops and bottoms on the George Foreman grill being toasted.

    Tips

    • Be sure the drip tray is in place to catch the excess fat.
    • I use 80/20 ground beef for this recipe, use lean meat for healthier burgers.
    • To make cheeseburgers just place a slice of cheese on top of each patty and allow it to melt with the lid open.
    • The internal temperature of your burgers should be 160° when checked with a meat thermometer.
    • I have a George Foreman Contact Smokeless and it cooks 2 half pound burgers or 2 buns at a time.

    Storage and Reheating

Leftover burger patties can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 3 days and reheated in the microwave. But, with a cooking time of under 10 minutes including the bun we make ours fresh every time.
