Why we like cooking hamburgers on an electric grill
- Quick cook time – large half pound burgers are done in about 6 minutes.
- Weather isn’t a factor – here in Kansas we have some windy days and cooking outdoors on the charcoal grill isn’t an option.
- Toasted buns too – we toast our buns right on the grill before we cook the burgers.
Here’s what you’ll need
hamburger patties – I usually just buy mine all ready portioned out and ready to go. I season them simply with salt and black pepper. Use your favorite seasonings; garlic powder, onion powder, or seasoning salt would all be great.
buns – we love brioche buns, but any bun will work perfectly. Make sure you toast them first to make them extra soft.
toppings – we love red onion, lettuce, tomato, ketchup and mustard, use your favorite toppings.
How to grill the best burgers
- Preheat the grill to 425° with the lid closed, this takes about 5 minutes.
- Butter the buns and place on the grill for 2-3 minutes. Leave the lid open for this so you don’t smash the buns.
- Place burger patties on the lower grill plate, close the lid and cook for 3 minutes.
- Flip burgers over and cook an additional 2-3 minutes, or until it reaches the desired level of doneness.
- Serve with your favorite condiments and toppings.
Tips
- Be sure the drip tray is in place to catch the excess fat.
- I use 80/20 ground beef for this recipe, use lean meat for healthier burgers.
- To make cheeseburgers just place a slice of cheese on top of each patty and allow it to melt with the lid open.
- The internal temperature of your burgers should be 160° when checked with a meat thermometer.
- I have a George Foreman Contact Smokeless (not an affiliate link, just showing you what I use) and it cooks 2 half pound burgers or 2 buns at a time.
How long to cook a hamburger on a George Foreman
Cook half pound hamburger patties for a total of about 5-6 minutes for medium to medium well done burgers.
Do you preheat a George Foreman Grill open or closed?
To preheat a George Foreman grill close the lid and set to the desired temperature. The red light will turn green and it will beep when it is ready.
Do you spray the grill with cooking spray?
It is not necessary to spray the grill plates because they are nonstick.
Do you have to flip burgers on George Foreman Grill?
Technically you don’t need to turn food over when grilling since there is a heating element on the top and bottom. However, I turn meat over about halfway through so it browns as evenly as possible.
Storage and reheating
Leftover burger patties can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 3 days and reheated in the microwave. But, with a cooking time of under 10 minutes including the bun we make ours fresh every time.
