Our Healthy Banana Smoothie Recipe is made with simple ingredients; fresh bananas, vanilla yogurt, skim milk, a little honey and a handful of ice. We top it with graham cracker crumbles to give it the taste of a banana cream pie.

A mason jar mug full of Banana Smoothie sitting on wooden coaster.

We love a good smoothie! This one tastes like a banana milkshake, but without the ice cream. My favorite kind of smoothies are made with wholesome ingredients, so this one is perfect.

The best part about smoothies is that they are a great alternative to a less-than-good-for-you snack or dessert. They are easy, filling, and satisfying. The older I get the more I try to eat better, and smoothies make a good alternative to traditional cake, pie or ice cream. This one also makes a great breakfast smoothie because all of the ingredients are healthy.

Two banana smoothies and a bunch of bananas, bottle of honey, and a few graham crackers behind them.

This recipe was adapted from Fitness Magazine. They call it a weight loss smoothie, and while I don’t think it can make someone lose weight, I feel like it is definitely a better choice than many other sweet treats.

    Ingredients

See recipe card for exact amounts..

A cup of ice, two frozen bananas, cup of skim milk, two containers of yogurt, a small bowl of honey and a small bowl of graham cracker crumbs.

    Ingredient Notes

bananas – fresh or overripe bananas can be used for this recipe.

yogurt – I like light vanilla Greek yogurt because it’s nutritional. To make this dairy-free plant based yogurt can be used.

milk – to keep calories down we use skim milk. Use the milk of your choice. I don’t see any reason why whole milk, 2% milk, or plant-based milk such as almond milk, cashew milk, oat milk, or soy milk wouldn’t work in this smoothie.

honey – I like to add a little natural sweetness without added sugar. Maple syrup would be a great natural alternative to honey.

ice cubes – we add ice to help us achieve the frozen creamy texture we look for in a smoothie.

How to make banana smoothie without ice cream

    1. Place all of the ingredients into the blender.
    2. Blend on low until you no longer hear large chunks of ice hitting the sides of the pitcher, the time it takes to get this accomplished will depend on the power of the blender you are using. Then turn up to medium, blend 10-15 seconds, turn up to high and blend until smooth.
    3. Pour into four 12 oz (or larger) glasses and top with crumbled graham cracker crumbs, if desired.

For best results smoothies are enjoyed fresh. Since they are ice based they will melt in the refrigerator.

    Additions

    • Add a splash of vanilla extract for extra flavor.
    • For a thicker smoothie with a protein boost a little almond butter or peanut butter can be added. Just add the desired amount of nut butter and adjust the milk so the smoothie is the consistency you want.
    • Add a pinch of cinnamon.
    • For a chocolate banana smoothie add a little cocoa powder and add a little more honey so it’s sweet enough.

Mindy, this looks like something I need to make – even if it won’t “make me lose weight!” 😀 Love the graham cracker garnish.

I am not really a smoothie fan, but this one sounds and looks really creamy and tasty, Mindy.
