    • Easy to customize with your favorite toppings
    • Great for family pizza night or parties

    Ingredients

All of the ingredients needed to make the Pizza on Sourdough Bread recipe.

    Ingredient Notes

This recipe starts with just three basic ingredients—sourdough bread, pizza sauce, and cheese. Add your favorite toppings to make it your own. It can also be made very affordably using store-brand ingredients.

    • Sourdough Bread: The sliced kind is easy to find at most grocery stores. There’s usually a store-brand version and sometimes a fresh-baked option in the bakery section that’s more affordable than name-brand loaves. You can, of course, use any type of bread you like.
    • Pizza Sauce: Your favorite brand, a store brand, or even homemade will work great here. Use whatever you have on hand.
    • Cheese: Mozzarella is the classic choice for pizza, but we use an Italian blend with mozzarella, provolone, parmesan, Romano, fontina, and asiago. It melts beautifully and gives you extra flavor in every bite. While freshly grated cheese melts a little better, we use the pre-shredded kind for convenience.
    • Toppings: We made a couple Hawaiian with Canadian bacon and pineapple, a couple of pepperoni using mini pepperonis and a couple of cheese using just the cheese blend with a little extra parmesan cheese. They are so tasty!

    Topping Ideas

Here are a few fun and tasty combinations to try. Mix and match, or let everyone make their own!

    • Classic Pepperoni: Mini or regular pepperoni and mozzarella (add a sprinkle of oregano or pizza seasoning for extra flavor).
    • Hawaiian: Canadian bacon and pineapple chunks—sweet, salty, and super kid-friendly.
    • Veggie: Mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, olives, and spinach.
    • BBQ Chicken: Cooked chicken, BBQ sauce instead of pizza sauce, red onion, and mozzarella.
    • Breakfast Pizza: Scrambled eggs, cooked bacon or sausage, and cheese (fun brunch twist!).

Step 4: Bake in a 400° oven for 10 minutes.

Why Sourdough Bread Works So Well for Pizza

Sourdough bread makes a great pizza base because its slightly tangy flavor pairs well with pizza sauce and cheese. The sturdy slices hold toppings without getting soggy and bake up with a soft center and crisp edges.

While this recipe is similar to pizza toast, the sourdough isn’t pre-toasted, so the center stays soft and chewy. If you prefer a crispier, toast-like texture, lightly toast the bread before adding the toppings.

    FAQs

Can this be made gluten free?

Absolutely! There are several brands of gluten-free sourdough bread available at most grocery stores or online. Just swap it in and you’re good to go.

Can this be made ahead of time?

This recipe is best served fresh. Since it takes only about 15 minutes to make, I recommend assembling and baking it just before serving.

    Notes

Toppings: You only need a few pieces of each topping per slice—just enough to add flavor without weighing the bread down.
For a crispier base: Drizzle the bread lightly with olive oil and toast it in a skillet before adding the toppings and baking. It adds great flavor and makes the bread extra crispy.
For more browning: If you like your cheese and toppings a little more browned, broil the pizza bread for 1 to 2 minutes at the end of baking. Watch it closely since it can go from perfect to burnt quickly.
