Do you love IHOP Butter Pecan Syrup and want to make your own version at home? Me too! This recipe is 2 simple ingredients. That’s right, just 2 ingredients! This is one of those semi homemade recipes you are going to love.
We used to eat out at IHOP quite often when we lived across town from it. My favorite thing to get in the fall was pumpkin pancakes and I would top it with the butter pecan syrup. So delicious! I think pecan syrup taste great with pumpkin pancakes. Lee would usually eat either strawberry or blueberry syrup on his buttermilk pancakes.
Now that we live literally 5 minutes away from IHOP we hardly ever eat out. So now I make this syrup and my super easy pumpkin pancake recipe at home. I bet I can make them in less time than it takes to get to the restaurant and wait for a seat on a busy Saturday morning.
While my tagline is “Making delicious dishes using everyday ingredients” this is one of the few recipes on this blog that requires an ingredient you may not be able to find at your local grocery store.
We have 3 major grocery chains in Wichita and I couldn’t find this type (or any type) of pecan flavoring at any of them. I did find it at The Spice Merchant, a local spice shop, specialty coffee roaster, and tea room downtown. It is so fun to go there and browse. If you don’t have a place like this locally then you can buy it online or you could try a cake decorating or candy making store.
I thought about developing a recipe that uses pecans but I wanted the syrup to have butter pecan flavor just like IHOP’s but I did not want it to have pieces of pecans in it. And I wanted it to be easy and have close to the same shelf life as regular pancake syrup.
We use LorAnn Super-Strength Pecan Flavor (not an affiliate link, just want to show you what to look for). You can get it online through a couple of different retailers if you can’t find it locally.

Ingredient Notes
Butter Flavored Pancake Syrup – almost all brands of pancake syrup at the store has a butter flavored variety, even the store brand. This enables us to make our butter pecan syrup with just two ingredients. You can use sugar free butter flavored syrup if you want or need to.
LorAnn Super Strength Pecan Flavoring – this is an oil based flavoring that is very strong so you just need to add a little bit to your favorite brand of butter flavored pancake syrup. It comes in a 1 fl oz bottle and that will last for quite a while. My bottle is good until Feb 2026!
How to make our easy version of International House of Pancakes syrup
- Pour 2 cups of butter flavored syrup into a measuring cup, add 3/4 teaspoon of pecan flavoring and stir to combine.
- Serve over buttermilk pancakes, other flavored pancakes or French toast.
This is more of a guideline of how much pecan flavoring to use for 2 cups of syrup. If you want to make more or less syrup then just adjust the amount used accordingly. To flavor an entire 24 ounce bottle of syrup you would use about 1 – 1 1/4 teaspoons of flavoring.
Recipe Tip
Add a little pecan flavoring at a time and taste it in between additions so you end up with the amount of pecan flavor you like best. This flavoring is strong so you want to keep that in mind. You can always add more but you can’t take it back out.
Storage & Shelf Life
Store in an airtight container in the cabinet just like you would regular pancake syrup. The shelf life would be the same as the earliest for either of the ingredients. So whichever has the earliest best by date is the one I would go with.
Other uses for butter pecan syrup besides pancakes and waffles
While this syrup is great on fluffy pancakes it has other uses as well. See some ideas below.
- Add a little to a bowl of oatmeal instead of using white sugar or brown sugar.
- Use as a topping for vanilla ice cream.
- This is the perfect addition to a cup of coffee, giving it a delicious and unique taste.
- As a topping for desserts such as blondies, or almost any pumpkin, apple, peach or banana dessert.
