One tall glass of Iced Mocha Coffee topped with whipped cream and a chocolate sauce drizzle.

We absolutely love the flavor combination of chocolate and coffee. And homemade iced mochas are the perfect way to enjoy coffee drinks on hot summer days.

Plus, this recipe is perfect if you want to make one glass or many glasses because it can easily be doubled, tripled, etc.

It can even be made ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator so it is ready when you are. We keep ours in a mason jar so we can give it a good shake to mix it up right before serving.

A mason jar with coffee, bottle of milk, cup of ice and small bowl full of chocolate sauce.
A mason jar of coffee, bottle of milk, glass of ice, small bowl of cocoa powder and a tablespoon with some sugar in it.

    Ingredient Notes

Just a few simple ingredients are all you need to make this refreshing and delicious iced drink.

    • Coffee: Freshly brewed strong coffee that has been cooled down or leftover coffee work great for this easy recipe.
    • Chocolate Sauce: There are many different brands to choose from. Store bought or homemade chocolate syrup also works perfectly.
    • Milk: I like whole milk but virtually any kind of milk will work. Low-fat milk or non-dairy milk such and oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk can be used.
    • Cocoa Powder: This is a great option to use instead of mocha sauce that you may already have on hand.
    • Sugar: This is used in combination with the cocoa powder if you go with that option.
    • Whipped Cream: This ingredient makes your homemade mochas more like what you would get at your favorite coffee shop.

    How to Make Iced Mocha

    1. Mix coffee and chocolate sauce in a tall glass (at this point if you are using hot coffee you will need to cool it down, see tips below). If you are using cold coffee then add the milk and give it a good stir.
    2. Add ice and top with whipped cream and your favorite garnish, if desired.

    Tips

    • Whether you are using freshly brewed coffee or leftover coffee you will get the best results when you add the chocolate sauce (or cocoa powder and sugar) to the hot coffee. With that being said, if you use chocolate sauce it mixes together just fine in the cold coffee. You will definitely want the coffee to be hot if you are using cocoa powder and sugar.
    • If you are using freshly brewed coffee it will need to be cooled. See below tips on how to cool coffee.

    How to Quickly Cool Coffee

    • Use coffee ice cubes to cool off the hot coffee – fill an ice cube tray with coffee and freeze to use later.
    • Make the coffee twice a strong as usual then fill a big cup with ice and pour the hot coffee into the cup of ice. The coffee will cool as the ice melts.
    • Put individual servings of coffee in the refrigerator or freezer for a bit.

Topping Ideas for This Homemade Iced Mocha

Whipped cream is always a hit and there are several different garnishes you can top your coffee drinks with. Below are a few suggestions:

    • mini chocolate chips
    • a dusting of cocoa powder
    • chocolate drizzle
    • crushed peppermint candies
    • caramel drizzle
    • chocolate shavings
